Reader-friendliness key to web design

February 06, 2010

With many consumers beginning their product research online, websites have increasingly become an important marketing tool. For companies designing their first website, a recent article from Promotion World suggests they keep reader-friendliness in mind.

Organization plays a large part in enhancing readability, says Promotion World. Web pages that bombard a consumer with information in a cluttered manner may turn customers away. Instead, websites should be organized in a manner that is easy to read, helping to focus a customer’s attention on specific areas. Internet users tend to scan information quickly, so organizing text into small chunks may also help.

Font choices are also a large part of web design - if customers can't read a website, they may not purchase a product or service from it. Promotion World recommends that business owners avoid excessively using small text, bold-type and highlighting. Light font types used with dark backgrounds can also strain readers’ eyes and should be avoided as well.

A recent release from Catch Friday also recommends taking search engine optimization into account when designing a web page. Proper search engine optimization will allow business owners to generate more sales, says the company.
