Americans conducted more that 15 billion searches in May, according to a recent report from comScore. This number was up 3 percent from the previous month.

Google is primary search destination for the majority of American internet users. According to comScore, the search giant accounted for 63.7 percent of searches conducted in May. Sites in the Google networks made up 10.2 billion searches, up 2 percent from the previous month.

Though Google's primary competitors, Yahoo and Bing, amount to less than one-third of all searches, both engines increased their market share month-over-month. These gains came at the expense of Google, which lost 0.6 percent of its share in May.

The biggest mover in the industry was Amazon, with 14 percent more searches conducted on the site compared to the previous month.

With so many Americans using search engines to begin their product research, search engine optimization is becoming especially critical for many businesses.
