iPad to dominate tablet market through 2010

August 30, 2010

Market research firm iSuppli recently reported Apple’s iPad will likely dominate the burgeoning tablet market until at least 2012 due to its greater utility than current competitors' offerings, such as Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes and Noble’s Nook.

iSuppli estimates the iPad will account for more than 74 percent of the total tablet shipments in 2010, as intrigue over the device continues to grow. Even in 2011, when more competitors hit the market, iSuppli believes Apple will maintain more than 70 percent of the market share.

Current competitors include “PC-type tablet products and competitive slates,” but 2011 will bring devices with similar capabilities, which include web access and various applications. Companies specializing in mobile application development have altered some solutions specifically for the iPad, and they will likely do the same for new products released next year.

“Although the iPad has been on the market for only a few months, powerful interests throughout the technology business are devoting enormous resources to challenge and topple Apple’s domination in this fast-growing marketplace,” said Rhoda Alexander, director of monitor research at iSuppli.

Also adding to the iPad’s success is its place in enterprise mobility, according to iPass. The company recently reported nearly 60 percent of the companies surveyed plan to use the tablet for “a substantial amount of work.”ADNFCR-3257-ID-19932465-ADNFCR

MySpace implements cross-platform sharing feature for Facebook

August 30, 2010

On Monday, MySpace introduced a cross-platform sync function that works with competing social network Facebook. The feature may enable brands to reach more consumers with their MySpace marketing campaigns.

Called "Sync with Facebook," the new function enables MySpace users to broadcast status updates and share content, including videos, images and music, on Facebook. Marketers could use the feature to push promotional content simultaneously across both platforms.

While MySpace users will be able to share content through Facebook, the feature is limited to one-way interactions - Facebook users are unable to broadcast messages through MySpace. The News Corp.-owned social network has a similar arrangement in place with Twitter, though Twitter users can also post content to MySpace.

"This new sync functionality is part of an ongoing effort to make it simple for people to share their updates beyond MySpace and allow fans and friends to interact with that content across the web," said Jennifer Ruffner, director of product management at MySpace.

Together, Facebook and News Corp. reach a tremendous number of consumers on a monthly basis. According to comScore, web properties owned by both companies served more than 200 million unique viewers in July.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19934025-ADNFCR

Emerging channels may drive growth of online marketing platforms

August 26, 2010

As consumers increasingly use social platforms and their smartphones for product research, a recent study conducted by Borrell Associates indicates these channels may lead online marketing expenditures in 2011.

The ad agency anticipates that online ad spend will grow in 2011, from $45.6 billion to $51.9 billion. This growth is expected to be driven by increased interest in emerging and mobile platforms.

Looking to reach 178 million American internet users who watch online videos, marketers are expected to invest more than $5.6 billion on videos - up 60 percent from 2010. The user friendliness of the format is also enabling smaller businesses to take advantage of the large audience online video serves.

Meanwhile, Borrell also anticipates that mobile ad spend will rise as smartphone penetration increases. The firm projects one out of every five marketing dollars will be devoted to the mobile platform.

Research firm comScore recently reported that nearly 85 percent of the entire U.S. internet audience watched online videos. While Hulu delivered the most video ads, ad network Tremor Media reached the greatest number of American internet users.

Introduction of Facebook Places spurs interest in foursquare

August 26, 2010

Last Thursday, Facebook announced the release of its geo-social location application, Facebook Places. While some thought the new app would convert users of other location-based social networks, foursquare announced that it recently had the biggest day of new signups ever.

Dennis Crowley, CEO of foursquare, made the announcement through his Twitter account. As Mashable notes, the surge in activity on the platform was likely due to the heightened awareness of location-based tools generated by the debut of Facebook Places. Currently, foursquare is nearing the 3 million user mark.

Crowley is optimistic that two or more geo-social social networks can coexist, provided they serve unique audiences. "Facebook is about sharing experiences that you've had," he told Mashable during an interview. "Foursquare is more about the present tense and the future tense."

To better serve businesses as a social mediamarketing platform, foursquare recently completed another round of fundraising, generating more than $20 million. Speaking with TechCrunch, Crowley indicated the firm plans to change its location and hire more staff to expedite business approvals on the service.

Launch of Gmail VoIP feature results in 1 million calls on first day

August 26, 2010

On Thursday, Google released its voice-over-internet-protocol feature for Gmail users, who proceeded to make more than 1 million phone calls in the first 24 hours.

Currently, only users in the United States and Canada have access to the service, which features free calls to either country as well as cheap international rates. According to Google, it is using the revenue it will collect from international calls, which cost close to 2 cents per minute, to keep the local calls free.

The feature is not available to all Gmail users in the U.S. and Canada just yet, and it is unknown when Google will reach complete availability. The staggered rollout, however, is not uncommon for Google. With its social networking tool, Wave, the company provided invites to some Gmail users to test the program in beta before making it available to all users.

Some have speculated that Google is attempting to dethrone Skype as the VoIP leader, however, others think the company simply wants to provide its users with complete communication services and compete with popular social media websites.

“We assume Google’s ulterior motive is less about disrupting the telecommunications and more about driving engagement within Gmail and its social-networking activities, to better compete with social networks such as Facebook,” Goldman Sachs analyst James Mitchel told investors.

To compete with Facebook, Google must lure customers with these features. According to its most recently released statistics, Facebook has surpassed 500 million total users worldwide.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19932438-ADNFCR

New Dell smartphone expected to struggle

August 25, 2010

Dell recently released its first smartphone, the Aero, which many mobile industry experts have claimed is unlikely to succeed in the competitive market, while others believe it may find its niche with small- and medium-sized businesses.

CRN.com cited the Aero's exclusivity with AT&T, the use of an outdated version of the Android operating system and its lack of features unavailable on other smartphones as the primary reasons for the device's potentially underwhelming results. However, ABI Research believes the expenses related to iPhones and BlackBerrys may help the Aero’s appeal among SMBs. As more companies begin to provide employees with smartphones, avoiding the high cost of iPhones or other enterprise fees charged by service providers may make the item a success.

“With Dell’s established relationships to small businesses through its laptop and PC business, the Dell brand, and Android’s consumer appeal, this device may help AT&T capture new customers in [the] underserved [SMB] segment,” ABI Research analyst Michael Morgan said.

Even with several industry experts and critics questioning its utility, the Dell Aero may be driven solely by the growing demand for smartphones for both enterprise and consumer users. A report from ChangeWave Research found more than 16 percent of Americans plan to purchase a device in the next 90 days.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19931522-ADNFCR

IT professionals question cloud security standards

August 24, 2010

A study recently conducted at the Def Con 2010 Hacker Conference found 96 percent of respondents believe cloud computing presents greater opportunities for cyber criminals to exploit vulnerabilities in security.

The overwhelming sentiment originates from the belief that companies using cloud computing - whether it’s for SaaS applications or website hosting - do not adequately secure their networks, which 89 percent of the 100 IT professionals surveyed stated. The cloud has become a crucial element of enterprise IT operations, primarily due to the flexibility it provides its users without forcing them to spend too much. Furthermore, smaller companies can use technology that was previously too expensive for them at a fraction of the former cost.

“More than anything, this research confirms our ongoing observations that cloud vendors - as well as the IT software industry as a whole - need to redouble their governance and security assurance strategies when developing solutions, whether cloud-based or not, as all IT systems will eventually have to support a cloud resource,” IT security expert Barmak Meftah said.

In terms of web design, cloud computing has enabled smaller companies to use highly capable solutions without having to invest in servers and other hardware required to manage and protect data.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19930833-ADNFCR

Social media marketing budgets are on the rise

August 23, 2010

With social networks increasingly giving businesses more advertising options, such as Twitter's new Promoted Tweets and Facebook's social ads, many firms are boosting their social mediamarketing budgets as well.

According to research firm eMarketer, nearly 6.7 percent of all marketing expenditures will be spent on social network ads in 2010. Further, this number will continue to grow to 24 percent of budgets in 2011, accounting for more than $2 billion of marketing dollars. With consumers increasingly registering for social network accounts, marketing budgets attributed to social media should rise similarly.

As eMarketer notes, the growth of social gaming will also draw marketers to the platform. Often, brands can pay online game developers to include their products in games. For example, Honda recently began promoting its 2011 CR-Z on "Car Town," which appeals to car enthusiasts.

AdAge recently reported that companies will focus most of their social media marketing budgets on Facebook. The source estimates the site pulls in nearly $1.2 billion globally from ad spend. The self-serve ads, introduced in 2007, are the network's most popular asset, accounting for 50 percent of Facebook's ad revenue.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19929876-ADNFCR

Google mobile application development has iPhone in sight

August 23, 2010

Google recently announced its popular photo-based search tool, Google Goggles, should be available for iPhone users before the end of the year. The application allows smartphone users to take a photo of an object and conduct a search involving it based upon the image.

Google first introduced the solution for phones using its Android operating system at the end of 2009, and has worked to refine the application since its debut. While the application has hardly become an item of widespread appeal for Android users, many cite it as one of the add-ons they enjoy most. The item has become especially popular for people as a comparison shopping tool to learn more about a brand or item.

While the company fully expects to complete the development of the application by the end of the year, there are some issues it is currently dealing with. Designing it as a third-party application requires different methods than as pre-loaded feature. Google’s database currently contains more than 1 billion images, but the company reports Goggles typically works only 33 percent of the time.

Google has made other announcements in recent weeks aimed at expanding its product inventory and overall capability. The company recently acquired Like.com to expand its ecommerce presence, however, terms of the deal were not disclosed.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19930051-ADNFCR

iPhone responsible for more than half of mobile advertising

August 22, 2010

Mobile
advertising firm Millennial Media recently announced Apple’s various devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, account for 55 percent of all mobile advertising. In its Mobile Mix Report 2010, Millennial found Android devices account for nearly 20 percent of mobile advertising and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry products make up 16 percent.

While Apple’s lead is sizable, Millennial believes Android will account for more of the market in the future as its devices continue to grow within the the global smartphone market. Further driving both sales and advertising on Android is that multiple smartphone manufacturers design devices that run on the operating system.

“The fact that more devices are being launched by the different handset manufacturers and the fact that developers are choosing to develop on multiple platforms, continues to show that where there is money to be made, developers will go there,” Steve McCord, head of product development at Millennial, said.

Millennial is currently the largest independent mobile advertising company, however, TGDaily.com recently reported RIM may be interested in acquiring the group. The move may help the BlackBerry manufacturer account for a larger percentage of mobile advertising, which should benefit the company financially.

The audience for these advertisements will likely expand, according to ChangeWave Research, as more than 16 percent of Americans plan to invest in a smartphone in the third quarter of 2010.ADNFCR-3257-ID-19929395-ADNFCR
